What is a lab grown diamond?

Lab grown diamonds can also be referred to as lab diamonds, lab created diamonds, above earth diamonds, cultured diamonds, man-made diamonds, among many others.

Simply put, they are diamonds which have been grown in a laboratory. These labs use cutting-edge technology to replicate the natural processes that create diamonds found and mined from the earth. The end result is a lab grown diamond that has the same chemical, physical and optical properties as a mined diamond.

How are lab diamonds grown?

Like mined diamonds, lab grown diamonds are created using extreme pressure and heat. However, unlike mined diamonds, these conditions are created inside a sealed chamber in a laboratory instead of deep below the Earth’s surface.

Lab grown diamonds can be created using two different methods, CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) and HPHT (High pressure, high temperature). Both methods begin with a diamond seed. The seeds are put through extreme conditions in a highly controlled environment, closely mimicking the environment beneath the Earth’s crust. The result is a beautiful stone that exhibits the same properties and qualities as a mined diamond.

Can you tell the difference between a lab grown diamond and a mined diamond?

Visually, there is no difference between lab grown diamonds v mined diamond. Even to the trained eye, it is almost impossible to distinguish between lab diamonds v mined diamonds – they are practically identical!

Distinguishing between the two requires a trained gemologist and sophisticated equipment specifically designed for identifying lab grown diamonds. Traditional observations and diamond-detectors cannot tell the two kinds of diamonds apart from one another since they are identical both chemically and optically. As such, a lab grown diamond and a mined diamond will look the same and you won’t be able to tell the difference!

Do lab diamonds test as real diamonds?

Yes! Lab grown diamonds have all the same properties of mined diamonds so they will test as real on a diamond tester.

Are lab grown diamonds conflict free?

Yes! Lab grown diamonds can be guaranteed to be 100% conflict free. This however cannot be said for mined diamonds. This is because the process that mined diamonds undergo can make the source mine hard to trace, thus it is impossible to be certain that the diamonds are truly conflict free.

Can you insure lab grown diamonds?

Yes! Lab grown diamonds can be insured, just like a mined diamond.

Do you provide a jewellery cleaning service?

Yes! We provide an in-store cleaning and polishing service for all JW Schwarz jewellery only. We offer a complimentary annual inspection, clean, polish service for customers who have purchased their ring from us. For clients that purchase a white gold ring, we offer a plating service with a nominal charge. We suggest that you have your white ring plated every 18 months to two years.
